OPS Board elects new leadership with new semester to start virtually
Classes start Tuesday morning for Omaha Public Schools, with students learning virtually.
The district has new leadership, as it prepares to fight the pandemic for another semester.
While some other metro districts plan to return to school with full in-person learning, OPS won't resume its hybrid plan for another two weeks.
Board members still say they're confident in the plan for students and families.
The first OPS Board meeting kicks off in 2021 and begins with new members and new leaders.
Marque Snow passed the torch to the next OPS Board President, former vice president, Dr. Shavonna Holman.
Jane Erdenberger, one of the newest board members, will serve as vice president.
"I recognized that I am brand new to the board but I know that I am qualified to serve in this position," she said.
Holman and Erdenberger both are stepping up to lead during a school year unlike any other.
While OPS plans to start the new semester fully remote, some like Matthew Aubrey say kids need to go back in-person.
"OPS must create an aggressive plan to return to full-time in-person learning as quickly as possible," he said.
The school board said the district will vaccinate school nurses this week. Teachers are supposed to be vaccinated soon after.
